The nutrition of The Great Horned Owl

The Great Horned Owl has very specific eating habits. This type of owl is a nocturnal hunter and therefore hunts for food at night. The Great Horned owl hunts for its prey by perching on tree branches, than swoops in when they have their eye on a catch. The Great Horned Owl’s diet consists of small animals such as rats, weasels and squirrels. They also enjoy snacking on fish, insects and lizards. Although they mostly eat smaller animals, they can also eat larger prey such as rabbits. The Great Horned Owl is not a picky eater and will eat almost anything it can catch. Once this owl catches its prey, it swallows it whole. The Great Horned owl has a fairly small stomach, so they regurgitate their food after consuming it. Their regurgitation is called a pellet, which consists of anything the owl’s body cannot digest.
